Renewable Energy Certificates

A Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) is an electronic, tradeable commodity equal to 1 Megawatt hour of renewable energy generation. A REC is similar to a share certificate as it represents a unit of value and may be traded for financial return. Also like a share certificate, the value of a REC can move up and down.

The operation of RECs is coordinated by the Office of Renewable Energy Regulator and are governed by the Renewable Energy (Electricity) Act 2000 and the Renewable Energy (Electricity) Regulations 2001.

When you have a solar power system installed by Nu Energy that solar power system will attract a certain number of RECs. However, only a person who is registered with the Renewable Energy Regulator can actually receive RECs, so in order to receive the RECs from the installation of your solar power system you need to apply to be registered. Instead, you can assign those RECs to Nu Energy, and we can receive them from you because we are already registered.
